Cash flow for trades ยท ABN holders

The job's done. The builder pays in 45 days. Wages are due Friday.

If you invoice builders or other businesses on 30, 45 or 60 day terms, invoice finance lets you get most of that money now, against an invoice you've already sent, instead of waiting for the builder's payment run.

Applications are assessed and funded by our partner FundTap. Circlestone is not the lender.

How invoice finance works, in plain English

  1. You finish the work and invoice as normal

Your invoice goes to the builder or business on their usual terms.
  2. You pick an invoice to fund

Sign up with FundTap and connect Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks or Reckon (no software isn't automatically a no). You choose which invoice. No obligation to fund the others.
  3. FundTap advances up to 90%

You see the exact fee before you confirm. Once approved, FundTap says funds arrive within 2 hours.
  4. The builder pays you, as usual

On the due date FundTap direct debits the advance plus the fee from your account. The builder pays into your normal account and isn't contacted by FundTap.

It isn't a loan you draw on at will. It brings forward money you're already owed on a specific invoice.

What it costs. One fee per invoice, from 4%, made up of a base plus an amount for each day until the due date. Longer terms cost more; if the builder pays early the fee comes down, and if the due date moves out it goes up. Without accounting software the fee starts higher. FundTap lists no setup, monthly or exit fees.

FundTap's own example: a $4,500 invoice due in 30 days: $4,050 advanced, $235 fee, $4,285 debited on the due date, leaving you the other $215.

Who it suits

  • ABN-holding trades and subcontractors: sparkies, plumbers, carpenters, concreters, painters, civil crews and the like
  • You invoice builders, developers or other businesses on terms (30, 45, 60 days)
  • The work is done and the invoice is out but not yet paid or overdue
  • Your books are reasonably up to date

Who it doesn't suit

  • You're paid on the spot or at the till
  • You need money before you've invoiced anything (e.g. for a deposit)
  • It's for personal use. This is business finance only
  • Invoices already past their due date can't be funded

Eligibility isn't approval. FundTap reviews every application, runs a credit check on the business and its owners, and can say no. Larger limits may need security. Source: fundtap.co/how-it-works/eligibility.

Before you sign up, worth weighing

  • Work out the fee as a dollar amount for the invoice and term, not just the percentage
  • Ask whether chasing the invoice, a deposit or progress claim, or shorter terms on your next quote would fix the gap for free
  • Have a chat with your accountant or bookkeeper if you're unsure it's right for the business
  • Check payment terms and Security of Payment rights in your state; a late builder can sometimes be pushed to pay

Common questions

Is this a loan?
It's invoice finance: an advance against a specific unpaid invoice, repaid on the invoice's due date. FundTap charges a fee per invoice rather than interest. It's still a financial commitment, so read FundTap's terms before you accept.
Will the builder know?
FundTap says its facility is non-disclosed and it doesn't contact your customers. The builder keeps paying into your normal account.
What if the builder pays late?
FundTap recalculates the fee for the actual number of days, so if the repayment date moves out, the fee goes up. Check FundTap's terms on what happens if an invoice isn't paid.
Does Circlestone see my details or decide anything?
No. You sign up on FundTap's site. Circlestone doesn't see your application, give advice on whether it suits you, or make any credit decision.
Is there a minimum or maximum?
FundTap's pricing page says the smallest invoice it funds is $300 and limits typically go up to $300,000.
